ESL has unveiled a full list of invitees for IEM Katowice 2020. New invites were received by seven teams, among which are NAVI and Virtus.pro.
Other five invitations from the organizers were given to some of the lineups that are featured in the Top 10 of HLTV's World Ranking, and these are Team Liquid, Evil Geniuses, the champions of EPICENTER 2019 - Team Vitality, 100 Thieves, and Ninjas in Pyjamas. FaZe Clan is the only team from the Top 10 that was left without an invite.
Prior to that, spots at the upcoming Intel Extreme Masters tournament were secured by FNATIC, Astralis, and mousesports. They earned their tickets to the championship in Katowice by winning events of the ESL Pro Tour circuit. FNC placed first at DreamHack Masters Malmö, whilst Astralis reign supreme at IEM Beijing. At the end of 2019, they were joined by mouz, who conquered the trophy of ESL Pro League Season 10.
Sixteen teams in total will participate in IEM Katowice 2020. The last six spots are set to be played off in the regional qualifiers: Europe (3), North America (1), Oceania (1), and Asia (1).
The tournament in Poland is scheduled for February 25 - March 1. Matches of the group stage will take in place in Int. Congress Centre, whilst the Playoffs will be hosted in Spodek Arena. The prize pool for this event is $500,000: half of this sum ($250,000) will be given to the eventual champions.
It’s worth noting that last year’s IEM Katowice was the Valve-sponsored Major. There, it was the Danes of Astralis who came out on top. In the final match, they managed to defeat the Finnish five of ENCE Esports. Then, the MVP award was handed to Emil "Magisk" Reif, who averaged a 1.28 rating.
