The Danish team of MAD Lions has joined the list of participants for IEM Katowice 2020. They earned the last third spot that was allocated to the European qualifier, while the previous two were conquered by FaZe Clan and G2 Esports.
The pathway of the Danes to the Katowice championship took them through the lower bracket, to which they dropped after losing to G2 in the final of the winners’ bracket. In the first match, MAD Lions took down the Polish five of Illuminar Gaming, 2-1: 16-12 Nuke, 10-16 Overpass, and 19-17 Train. After that, they faced off against ENCE Esports, who previously knocked out x-kom AGO.
The final meeting between MAD Lions and ENCE lasted two maps. First, the Danish squad won Overpass, losing only 1 round on the CT side, 16-7. Second, they prevailed on the enemy’s pick, Mirage (16-10), closing out the series at a 2-0 mark. Fredrik "roeJ" Jørgensen was the MVP of this match, as he scored a 1.65 rating and made 52 kills (52-27 K-D).
MAD Lions are the fifteenth confirmed participant for IEM Katowice 2020. Out of all the teams that will travel to Katowice, ten of them acquired direct invites. Five others, including the roster led by Nicolai "HUNDEN" Petersen, made it through the regional qualifiers. These are Cloud9, ViCi Gaming, FaZe Clan, and G2 Esports.
The last ticket to the tournament in Poland will be handed out in the qualifier for Oceania, which is scheduled for January 14-16. Eight teams will take part in it, and one of them is Renegades, who just recently bid farewell to Oliver "DickStacy" Tierney.
IEM Katowice 2020 will be running from February 25 to March 1. The prize pool for this event is $500,000.
